Review of the Prometheus Ocean Diver

Titanium has a lower heat capacity than steel, so it feels 'warmer' when worn, and has a bronze-tinted color that I quite like. In fact, the combination of sapphire and titanium is a personal favorite for my watches. Note, however, that titanium's unmatched strength-to-weight ratio does not mean su***ce hardness; in fact titanium scuffs and scratches more easily than stainless steel, so it won't look new very long. That seems appropriate for a tool watch like this, but it's something to consider pre-purchase. On the plus side, if you're nickle sensitive and can't wear steel, titanium is hypo-allergenic.The 60-click bezel is 12-sided and also made of titanium. The tritium insert in the pip means it's useful in the dark, but the smooth finish makes it hard to grip and turn when wet. They're hinged by vertical pins, yielding a definite, firm click, and slightly unusual action. Like the crown, they are ion-plated black for a low-key color accent. The bracelet is another highlight. Solid end links and solid links with an up-and-down link design; it's extremely comfortable and very well matched to the watch. As you'd expect, nighttime visibility is first rate with readability enhanced by max-brightness green tubes around the dial, and an orange tube at 12 o'clock for orientation. Simple and effective. It would be nice if you could read the chronograph, day, or date at night, but that's probably impossible using tubes.Overall, this is far and away my favorite watch from Luminox. It's light, very functional, and it has a nicely detailed design and construction.

Rolex's second announcement this year at BaselWorld 2010 was a redesigned Explorer. I've always loved the Explorer for its unparalleled simplicity and stark elegance, but at only 36 millimeters, it was a tad bit diminutive by today's standards. Not anymore. The size of the new Explorer is much more in line with modern expectations.Below is a list of everything that's new in the new Rolex Explorer: 39 millimeters rather than 36. That's only one millimeter smaller than their other tool watches (like the new Rolex Submariner Date). The movement now uses the new Parachrom Blue hairspring which we discussed previously in the context of the Rolex Milgauss. The now-standard signed chapter ring not my favorite new feature, but believe me, I wouldn't let it stop me from wearing one.The bracelet on the new Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA is one of the sturdiest and best designed dive bracelets we've ever seen.Advice for Buying a RolexIf you're thinking of buying a Rolex, the best piece of advice I can give you is "caveat emptor!" ("Buyer beware!") Do your research and know the product. If you're buying new, buy from a reputable authorized dealer, and you'll be perfectly fine. Buying used is trickier. Don't buy from anyone without a good, solid, verifiable reputation. If possible, meet in person, and to be extra sure your new watch is genuine, meet at either an authorized dealer or a watchmaker who can verify the authenticity before the deal is made.Forgeries are extremely sophisticated nowadays and are virtually indistinguishable from an authentic to the untrained eye.

Review of the Prometheus Recon 5

At least there's still no cyclops (date magnifier), and thankfully, they did not add polished center links like the new GMT Master 2.As with the Anniversary Submariner and new GMT Master 2, the Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA gets the new "maxi-dial" which means that the hour markers are larger, and both the the minute hand and the hour hands are slightly wider. The depth rating increases from silly to ludicrous: 1,220m (4,000ft) on the original to 3,900m (12,800ft) on the DEEPSEA.The crystal goes from flat thick sapphire to domed thick sapphire.New super-hard ceramic bezel with platinum-filled numbers. We first saw this design on the new GMT Master 2.Much-improved ratcheting clasp that increases in 1.8mm increments. They're calling the new model the Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA. The DEEPSEA has several changes from the original Sea-Dweller:As with the new Yacht-Master 2, it's more heavily branded. The previous Sea-Dweller was notable for its restraint; this one adds the "ROLEX" repeated around the chapter ring, additional blurbs on top of the "ringlock", and "DEEPSEA" above the center. The caseback goes from flat stainless steel to a titanium/steel alloy. The new "Ringlock System", which is a stainless steel ring under the crystal that absorbs some of the pressure.New blue-colored lume on the dial and bezel dot — very cool!.Larger case with slightly updating styling. As before, it has a helium escape valve, which only matters if you do saturation diving.

Review of the Multi

Electro-luminescent lighting. The PAW1200 series has a nice and bright illumination function which is pretty standard on digital watches these days. It also has another feature which I've come to love on Casios: the Auto Light Switch. To activate the Auto Light Switch, hold down the illumination button for three seconds (until the watch beeps), then whenever you tilt the watch face toward you at a 40° angle or greater, the watch will automatically illuminate. And it's even smart enough to only do it when the ambient light level is low enough that you actually need it. I test drove the green model which I didn't think I'd like the color of, however it has really grown on me, and I think has actually become my favorite of the three. The Casio Pathfinder PAW100-3V has definitely become a favorite among my many Casios. I love all the features, naturally, but there's more to love about this watch than just what it can do for you. Although it's not exactly a subtle timepiece, I think Casio did an excellent job on the design. It sits very comfortably on my wrist, and does not feel nearly as large as it is. All the buttons are well placed, big, easily accessible, and provide just the right amount of feedback. The sensors in the watch, which are located on the top left-hand side of the case, are inconspicuous, and reasonably well contained. The contour of the watch works both for my skinny wrist, and on some larger wrists I strapped it to for ergonomic testing.
